When buying or selling a car, you have to communicate with people you don't know. Even after a short phone call or e-mail exchange, it's difficult to accurately gauge how trustworthy someone is. To avoid taking unnecessary risks when speaking to strangers, be aware of the following:
  • Use the messaging feature of mobile.de

When communicating with buyers or sellers, always use the messaging feature offered by mobile.de.

  • Stay on the platform

Don't move the conversation to another channel such as e-mail or WhatsApp. mobile.de has set up various anti-fraud security measures for buyers and sellers communicating via the platform. Fraudsters will often try to divert your communications away from the platform (e.g. "Please reply to me by e-mail at..." or "Ping me on WhatsApp at...") to circumvent these security measures.

  • Only share personal information if you absolutely need to

Don't share your e-mail address or phone number with anyone unless it's absolutely necessary, such as to arrange a call back for a test drive.

  • Don't share sensitive documents online

Don't share personal documents such as your ID card, IBAN or scanned/digitised ID documents online. Fraudsters will attempt to exploit documents like these for other fraudulent purposes. There's generally no need to share these documents until you meet for a test drive or conclude a contract.

As a buyer
  • Save the ad: If you think you're likely to buy the vehicle, print the listing or save it on your computer. This means you'll still have access to it if the seller takes it offline.

  • Bargain alert: Be wary of offers that seem too cheap. Fraudsters can use very low prices to attract more prospective buyers. Proceed very carefully in such cases.

  • Never make a down payment or use a cash transfer service (e.g. Western Union) for such transactions. Should you want to use an escrow service, be careful with third-party providers.

  • Elaborate stories: If a seller tells you a complex story to delay a test drive or try to push you into doing something unusual, this may indicate fraudulent intent.

As a seller
  • Don't share documents online: Don't send scans of vehicle certificates or insurance documents. Cover the number plates when taking photos of your vehicle.

  • Check information: Check whether the information provided by the buyer is coherent and realistic.

  • Handover meeting: If possible, meet in a public place (e.g. bank branch) for greater safety and security when finalising the vehicle purchase.
